A political pressure group, the Enugu
Unity Forum, EUF, says it has commenced the process of making consultations to
ensure that a credible person succeeds Governor Sullivan Chime in 2015. This is
even as the group has commended Governor Chime for taking the bold stand which
led to the zoning of 2015 governorship position to Enugu North Senatorial zone.
The National Secretary of the Forum, Dr. Chuka Ezema, who spoke to journalists
on Tuesday said there was need to get a successor who would build on Chime’s
legacies. He disclosed that the EUF had so far visited three persons perceived
to be interested in taking over from Chime, stressing that “while two of them
said they would contest, one said he was interested but that he won’t contest.
“We are not going to submit name of any
individual to the PDP or to the Governor. What we are doing is that after this
consultation, we shall ex-ray the qualities of all the aspirants. With that the
Governor and the party will easily make a final choice”. Ezema observed that
Governor Chime had done considering the level of rot when he took over in 2007.
The EUF scribe, who said the main objective of the forum was to ensure good
governance, noted that looking at the progress recorded on health, education,
agriculture, security, road construction and rehabilitation, even a pessimist
would agree that Chime had performed well.“Residents of Enugu State know the state of infrastructural decay in the state before Chime assumed office in 2007 and the massive improvement recorded now. “The state can now boast of numerous good roads, well equipped hospitals that provide free maternal and child health care. “Besides, Enugu state under Chime’s watch is among the most peaceful states in the federation, and this has accelerated social and economic development”, he said. He added that Chime had also shown himself as a good administrator, noting that before Chime took over in 2007, workers in the state were owned arrears of salaries.
“In the case of the immediate past administration, workers were owned arrears of salaries while many were disengaged. “Today, the story has changed as workers now receive their salary before 25th of every month. while many disengaged workers have been recalled. “Chime has restored the confidence the of civil servants in state by paying their allowances and other welfare packages as and when due”, he said. Ezema solicited the support of residents for Chime’s 2015 senatorial ambition, noting that it would be a way to appreciate his good work in the state “One of the ways to appreciate his efforts in transforming the state is to allow him to go to senate in 2015. “The forum supports the governor’s ambition to be in the Senate in 2015 because he has served the people of the state very well”, he added.
