The former president in an interview with Bloomberg TV Africa said the nation’s security agencies initially underestimated the violent Boko Haram group. “If the president got the information within 12 hours of the act and he reacted immediately, I believe those girls would have been rescued within 24 hours, maximum-48 hours.” Obasanjo described Jonathan’s doubts about the abduction as unfortunate, saying the latter’s attitude literally was: “Is this true, or is it a ploy by people who don’t want me to be president again?” The kidnap of the schoolgirls by the Boko Haram sect on April 14, 2014 has since sparked global outrage which led to the persistent ‘#BringBackOurGirls’ social media campaign.
He recalled that three years ago when he initiated peace moves with relatives of the insurgents, he related his findings to top national security officers who rather than take the issue seriously, dismissed it, saying that the sect members were “riff-raffs” bent on destroying the government of the day. On his purported endorsement of the rumored presidential ambition of Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, the Ota-born retired General stated that although the former has yet to intimate him of his decision, he would wish him “good luck” if he did so. Asked to assess the current administration, Obj as fondly called, said: “I don’t believe he (Jonathan) has performed to the expectations of many Nigerians, not just me.”
