Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was injured when his truck flipped and rolled over in a suburb of Charlotte, NC, Tuesday. The Charlotte Observer reports that Newton was able to communicate with paramedics at the scene. According to reports, Newton fractured bones in his lower back during the rollover. He suffered two transverse process fractures in his back. Transverse processes are the small bones that protrude from either side of the vertebrae. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered the same injury this season. He was out one game. The Panters QB was headed to Bank of America Stadium on his day off when the crash occurred.
Witnesses say a Buick Verano with temporary Georgia license tags “appeared out of nowhere” and struck Newton’s Dodge truck. Another witness said Newton was driving at a high rate of speed when he collided with the Buick. Newton’s trucked rolled over 2 times. He was able to get out of the truck and sat on a curb staring off into space as if in a daze. Both Newton and the Buick’s driver were transported to a hospital on back boards. Newton’s truck sustained extensive front-end damage. The Buick was struck on the front-right side.
