He is an All-American defensive lineman from the University of
Missouri, he's expected to be picked in the NFL draft in May and his name is
Michael Sam. He publicly revealed in an interview with ESPN last Sunday that
he's gay. If drafted, he will make history being the first openly gay player
drafted by the National Football League. His agent said he does not think Sam's
decision to come out of closet will hurt his draft prospects. "I came to tell the world
I'm an openly proud gay man," he
said to the reporter.
He said he told his Missouri teammates last August and they
had no problems with that and surprisingly he discovered many people in the
media already knew he was gay. "I understand how big this is," he
said in the ESPN interview. "It's a big deal. No one has done this before.
And it's kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be ... I want to
be a football player in the NFL." Sam also spoke about his sexual
orientation, saying: "I just want to make sure I could tell my story the
way I want to tell it. I just want to own my truth." Well Michael was
forward, and wants the team who drafts him to accept him for who he is.
