LAGOS, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Health authority in Lagos State has confirmed one died of Lassa fever. State Commissioner for Health Jide Idris told reporters Friday that a 51-year-old resident of Ilasan Leki, died as he was presented late. The dead is among one of three confirmed cases in the state. Idris said another confirmed case, a 36-year-old lady, was currently receiving antiviral medication in Mainland Hospital. Idris said her condition was stable and ambulating. The third one, an index case at Ahmaddiya Hospital in Ojokoro, was also responding to treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, he said. Idris said there were also eight negative cases while three others were pending for confirmation. The commissioner told reporters that the government had listed 447 contacts of the confirmed cases and 438 of the contacts were being monitored.
Lassa fever is an acute and often fatal viral disease, occurring mainly in West Africa. It is usually transmitted by contact with the saliva or excreta of rats accessing homes and food stores. Early this week, the country's health ministry said outbreak of Lassa fever in Nigeria had spread to 17 states, killing 63 people.
