Caitlyn Jenner Confronts Protesters at Chicago Event Who Call Her 'an Insult to Trans People

Bruce Jenner
Jenner was invited to speak by the Chicago House, which describes itself as the “Midwest’s oldest provider of housing for those impacted by HIV/AIDS and/or LGBTQ marginalization” and the “home to the nation’s most comprehensive social service and support programs for transgender individuals, the TransLife Center.” The transgender reality star served as the keynote speaker for the organization’s 2015 Speaker Series Luncheon. A reported 1,000 people attended the event, which was held at the Hilton Chicago.

But when Jenner exited the hotel, she was met by a group of protesters. In footage posted on Facebook, the former Olympian is seen intensely talking to a woman holding up a sign. Over a loudspeaker, someone else can be heard yelling about being “insulted” and “violated.” In a different video, Jenner is told she’s an “insult to trans people.”
On Facebook, a page called “#IAintCait: Protest Caitlyn Jenner’s ‘Miss Representation’ Luncheon” explained the issue protesters had with the event: Jenner, coming from a position of wealth and privilege, does not represent the average transgender person who has to deal with a multitude of economic issues that she doesn’t face. The organizers wrote: “Who, you may ask, did they select to speak on the issues facing trans people and especially trans women in our city? Caitlyn Jenner. Caitlyn Jenner, who lives in a mansion and has a net worth of millions of dollars, while the average trans person has a 41 percent chance of experienceing homelessness [sic] and a nearly 50 percent chance of living off less than $10k per year. Caitlyn Jenner, who said in a segment on her hit new reality TV series I Am Cait, regarding people who rely on social services to get by: ‘You don’t want people to get totally dependent on it. That’s when they get into trouble. ‘Why should I work? You know, I’ve got a few bucks, I’ve got my room paid for.” If you think Chicago House’s shameless pandering to the trans community for mediocre representation, embodied by a clueless rich white woman who thinks disenfranchised trans women of color should just pluck themselves up off the street and stop being so lazy, is an insult and a disgrace, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Meet us in the lobby Thursday to tell Chicago House, Caitlyn Jenner, and all her supporters that Caitlyn Jenner doesn’t represent trans people! Stand up and say: #IAintCait!”
It’s unclear exactly how many people actually showed up, but many held signs criticizing Jenner and the Chicago House. Asked for a comment regarding the star speaking with the protesters, a rep for Jenner simply told Gossip Cop, “It was a great event.” Jenner was accompanied by Candis Cayne and other “I Am Cait” co-stars, with a camera crew documenting the trip.
During season 1 of the series and on her WhoSay blog, Jenner acknowledged some of the very same criticism she received from the protesters. The incident comes just a few days after Jenner was honored at Glamour magazine’s “Women of the Year” awards (see photo above). Check out the video below, and tell us what you think.
