The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Miami Heat last year to win their fifth NBA championship. President Obama hosted them at the White House last Monday to celebrate their victory in the championship game. Obama praised the Spurs for their the sportsmanship and hailed them as a great metaphor for what America should be all about. He noted that the Spurs have become the United Nations of basketball teams because of its team's diversity meaning that basketball has become an international sport.
Obama also praised the team for hiring WNBA star Becky Hammon last year making her the first full-time, paid female assistant on an NBA coaching staff. At the end of his speech he joked that if the NBA Champions want some tips on how to win back-to-back titles, "you know where to find me."
The Champs presented President Obama with a Spurs jersey labeled POTUS, with the number 1 and a signed basketball and he then posed for pictures with the team.
