Esther Kanu slumped in the early hours of January 7th 2015, was rushed to Garki General hospital Abuja where she later died. The autopsy now confirms she died of cardiac arrest. Her family devastated and cannot understand why a young lady like that could die of cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest, also known as circulatory arrest, is a sudden stop of blood circulation when the heart fails to contract effectively or at all. It is not a heart attack but can be caused by it. Unexpected cardiac arrest can lead to death within minutes like Esther's and it is called this is called sudden cardiac death. The treatment for cardiac arrest is immediate defibrillation if a "shockable" rhythm is present, while cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is used to provide circulatory support.
