Speaking during a recent Ohaneze Ndigbo seminar at the British House of Commons titled Diaspora Engagement for Transformation, Mrs. Kate Anolue the former Mayor of Enfield, challenged Nigerian women in the UK to seize the opportunity of the 2015 elections to enhance their presence in the political arena as has happened in Britain where 43% of parliamentarians are women and South Africa where ladies occupy 43% of political positions.
She said that at the moment, only 9% of political positions in Nigeria are occupied by women and that Nigeria only have nine female senators out of 109 members and 19 female members in the House of Representatives out of a total of 360. Using Britain where women have made significant gains since Nancy Astor became the first MP in 1919 as an example, Ms Anolue highlighted the fact that there are 143 female parliamentarians in the House of Commons out of a total of 650 seats, representing a 22% ratio. Also, one fifth of the members of the House of Lords are women.
