Tim Cook The Chief Executive Of Apple, Has Said He Is Proud To Be Gay
Full post after cut..................
Tim Cook is gay. The CEO of Apple made that rather unremarkableannouncement this morning in a crisp and wonderful essay in Businessweek. Unremarkable because, as he writes, “For years, I’ve been open with many people about my sexual orientation. Plenty of colleagues at Apple know I’m gay . . .” But Cook’s more public revelation is extraordinary because he is the chief of a Fortune 5 company that is also the world’s most admired and most valuable brand. To have a person like that come out of the closet to a wider public on his own terms and without shame will have an incredible impact that reaches far and wide.I don’t consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I’ve benefited from the sacrifice of others. So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy. What Cook has done is exactly what lesser-known gay people have been doing for decades. Changing hearts and minds, building bridges and fostering real understanding one conversation at a time. That Cook recognizes his special responsibility in this endeavor will engender even more respect for a very private man with a very public job.
