22yr old blogger and creator of 'For Brown Girls' dies of apparent Suicide

Karyn Washington, founder of the For Brown Girls blog, has died of an apparent suicide, according to reports. She was only 22 years old.  Her blog was about self-love, particularly among dark-skinned women. She also started the #DarkSkinRedLip promotional Ad against rapper A$AP Rocky's suggestion that darker-skinned women should avoid crimson lips. Following her lead, thousands of women of color posted photos of themselves proudly rocking red lips using the hashtag. While working earnestly to empower women of all races and colors, Washington was also dealing with personal struggles. According to a friend, she had been battling depression and was also finding it hard to deal with the loss of her mother.

"When I look at you I see a reflection of myself and most certainly that is why this hurts so badly," writes Washington's friend and fellow blogger Aliyah. "From now on I’ll forever remember your big beautiful smile, your charm, ambition, professionalism, entrepreneurship, confidence, humility, your drive, and your beautiful Brown Skin. That is what I’ll choose to remember."  Many other friends, fans and readers are sharing their grief on social media. Our thoughts go out to all those affected by Washington's death.
