Swiss police detained the co-pilot of an Ethiopian Airlines
flight that was hijacked and forced to land at Geneva’s international airport
early on Monday morning. Police said the suspected hijacker, whose name was given as
Hailemedihn Abera Tegegn, 31, took control of the plane when the pilot went to the toilet,
then landed and left through the window on a rope. He is under
custody pending investigation by Authorities of the two countries and has asked to be granted
asylum. No passengers or crew were injured. Flight ET 702 original destination was
Rome. Five Nigerians, 140 Italians, 11 Americans among others, were
among the 193 passengers on board the Rome-bound flight.
