I am always happy to share inspirational stories of how reading changed lives for the better, what inspires people to read, how to read and encourage more people to read at least an advert on the bill board. The World Encyclopedia writes that reading can help us in four ways, which are: functional literacy, workplace literacy, personal information and recreation. Like its always said “A reading nation is a winning nation.”
Readers club refers to reading as a way of life characterized by the habit of reading intensely and extensively. Poor reading is one of the major impediments to social and economic development in most low developed countries.I do think that the biggest challenge we have promoting reading is the lack of awareness and appreciation of the importance of reading. It is not only important for education and personal growth but it is a factor for economic and social development. When we read, we are able to visit other lands, planets and get to meet real and imaginary people of the past and present. Study shows that there has been a decline in reading with the new generation as its popularity has succumbed to the media technology attention. Almost in every household both kids and adults are occupied with one computer gadget or the other. So only place our kids actually spend more time reading is at school and for the adults the media technology recently are filled with interesting programs that make it difficult for one to forgo them. Perhaps the most time consuming competitor of reading is television.
Reading will help promote your patience. It is just a complex decoding process that demands and develops patience. Its sentences, paragraphs and pages unfold slowly, in sequence, and in a logic that is far from intuitive. Its was not surprising to read that studies has linked excessive TV watching/computer games with impulsive decision making and restlessness in both adults and children.
Reading will also help develop your verbal skills. To build your vocabulary you have to read, it is just the only way. Your success as a student depends enormously on what you can understand as you read and how you reason as you write and your vocabulary. You do not get better at watching TV/computer games by doing more. The skills required are so elemental that we are yet to hear of a TV/computer viewing disability.
Reading will help you stimulate your imagination When you are reading, you always imagine and select the cast, set the stage, and direct the action while television captures your imagination but does not liberate it. When you are reading you make each character look the way you want and you are in control than when you see something on TV. I know a good book at once stimulates and frees the mind.
