Kanu Nwankwo Listed Among World Football Legends

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) has named Nwankwo Kanu in the top 48 legend of football worldwide. IFFHS released the first phase of the list which includes Brazilian greats Pele and Ronaldo da Lima. Notable Africans on the list include former World player of the year George Oppong Weah, Roger Milla, Rabah Medjer, Muhammed Aboutrika, Mohmud El-Khatub and former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe. FFHS were formed in 1984 under FIFA’s approval and they focus on archiving football records, statistics and records of assocations across the globe. Kanu was the last Nigerian to win the CAF African Footballer of the Year award in 1999. He played for Ajax, Inter Milan and Arsenal.

Reacting, the Nigeria football Federation (NFF) 1st vice president, Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi in a chat with Tribunesport by phone Sunday described the feat as a well deserved one for Kanu, adding that it also brought honour and glory not only to the former Super Eagles captain but to the country. The Lagos Football Association chairman believes that the naming of Kanu among the legend of football will encourage upcoming players to put in their best.
